Divide the time from sunrise to sunset into fifteen muhurthas. Abhijit is the eighth, the one that sits over local noon. The length changes with the season because the day itself changes length. A summer Abhijit and a winter Abhijit are not the same number of minutes. The engine uses that day's sunrise.

Families use it when the rest of the day is awkward and a small act still needs a time: a short puja, a signature that cannot move, the moment a lamp is lit because the evening has arrived. They do not use it to cancel a marriage dosha list. A wedding is a different class of event, with its own exclusions.

On the today page, Abhijit is printed beside Rahu kalam so you can see whether the famous window is even free. Sometimes it is not, because the two can overlap depending on the weekday. The overlap is the useful thing to notice.
